Walter F. Zaremski, age 78, passed away on March 9, 2026, in Lancaster General Hospital.
He was a resident of Autumn House East, York, PA since January, 2025.
Born April 2, 1947, in Philadelphia PA, he was the son of the late Edmond A. Zaremski, Sr and Helen (Kuczynski) Zaremski. Walter grew up in the Bridesburg section of Philadelphia, where he was a lifeguard at the community pool. His friends called him “Lung” for his ability to remain underwater for long periods. He was a talented bass and electric guitarist, playing lead guitar in several bands. He loved music, books and traveling. Walt was a proud graduate of St. John Cantius Parochial School, LaSalle College High School, LaSalle College and the Florida International University. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Walter served in the U.S. Army and retired with the rank of Major. He proudly served our Nation and specialized in, among other areas: Adjutant General, Personnel Management, and Artillery. He oversaw and managed several Officer Clubs around the world. He was awarded, among other medals: Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, Humanitarian Service, and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea). After military retirement, Walt worked in the security industry. Additionally, he volunteered many hours for a local support group.
Walter is survived by his loving brother, Edmond, Jr.(wife Diane) and his sister, Joan (husband Karl) along with a host of extended family and friends. He was a caring uncle to: five nieces and nephews (Jeffrey, Christine, Alexis, Zachary, and Rachel) and five great-nieces and great-nephews (Jackson, Jack, Arlo, Samantha, and Isaiah)
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice. Thank you to the staff at Autumn House East, Lancaster General Hospital and so many folks with the UPMC organization. The family appreciates all of the compassionate care that was provided for Walt. We are grateful for the wonderful support provided by the York County Veterans Affairs Office.
The kind expressions of sympathy by many of Walt’s friends from his support group are greatly appreciated.
Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. 1551 Kenneth Road in York is honored to serve the family.
A private celebration of Walter’s life will be held by the immediate family at a later date. Walter will be laid to rest at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
