Born in Newport News VA on July 6,1942 passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025 in York, Pennsylvania where he resided since 2002. Al, as he was known by his family and friends, was a dedicated family man, teacher, coach and athletic director. After graduating from Warwick High School in 1960, where he ran track; Al attended William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia where he also ran track and cross country. Al graduated from W&M in 1964. Upon graduation, Al spent the next 30 years as a teacher, coach and Athletic Director for several area high schools in Hampton, Virginia.
In 1993 Al met his future bride, Margaret Mapp Thacker, known as Peggy; while enjoying one of their mutual passions, Bridge. Upon Al’s retirement, he and Peggy moved to Hunt Valley, MD. In 2002, Al and Peggy moved to their current home in York, PA and married in 2004. Al loved playing bridge both competitively and with friends. He was an avid fisherman and a die-hard New York Yankees fan. Al was Treasurer of his neighborhood Home Owner’s Association and President of the White Rose Bridge Club.
Al was known for his kind nature, willingness to help anyone, as well as, his pension for telling you his newest joke…often times quite colorful! Al adored his wife Peggy and her children and granddaughters as if they were his own. He spent countless hours enjoying their company and conversations while also cheering for them on the lacrosse fields. Al started a Christmas tradition of the “taped boxes” that his granddaughters will cherish forever.
Al is survived by his wife, Margaret Mapp “Peggy” Thacker; her children, Stephen Thacker and his wife Debbie, Anne Hallett Sarazin and her husband Hank; her five granddaughters, Sydni Mapp Thacker and fiancé Teddy Secor, Riley Watson Thacker, Devon Hallett Sarazin, Samantha Ray Thacker, Kayla Mapp Thacker; and his sister, Rose Insley Reed and her husband Robin.
