WEST YORK – Terry A. Bupp, a dedicated educator, cherished coach, devoted mentor, and respected member of his community, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Kathie M. (Hoffman) Bupp to whom he was married for 48 years.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York, is assisting with arrangements.
Born October 3, 1947, in York, he was a son of the late Edward H. and Grace K. (Hoke) Bupp. Terry was a proud graduate of William Penn Senior High School, class of 1965, and furthered his education at the University of Richmond, graduating in 1969. Following his education, he served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, demonstrating his dedication and sacrifice for his country.
Terry spent his career as a math teacher at West York Area High School, where he inspired countless students until his retirement in 2006. Alongside his teaching duties, he also took on roles as a coach within the West York Area School District, sharing his love for sports and fostering the athletic talents of young individuals. Even during their annual trips to Bethany Beach, Terry enthusiastically set up obstacle courses and games that brought laughter and fun to both children and adults alike.
Terry's accomplishments extended beyond the classroom. He was known as a legendary figure in the realm of coaching the Bulldogs, earning inductions into several prestigious halls of fame, including the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the West York Football Hall of Fame, and the York Area Sports Hall of Fame. His contributions to sports were not only as a coach but also as a manager and volunteer for the Special Olympics York County, and a York Chapter PIAA Basketball Official, an ASA Softball Umpire, and a PIAA Track and Field Official.
Terry was a member of St. Luke’s and Zion United Methodist Churches. Throughout his life, he was characterized by his passion, ambition, and humility. He remained grateful to those who supported him on his journey, never hesitating to acknowledge the contributions of others. His spirit and kindness left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered, from students to colleagues and fellow sports enthusiasts.
In addition to his wife Kathie, he is survived by three children, Troy A. Bupp and his wife Jera-Marie of Virginia, Trent A. Bupp of York, and Tracey A. (Bupp) Elder and her husband Andrew of York; seven grandchildren, Tate, Ashton, Emmarie, Ellis, Elizabeth, Addison, and Eli; a brother Timothy E. Bupp and his wife Sandra of York; a sister Dianne G. (Bupp) Carson of Maine; as well as several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother-in-law Gordon L. Carson.
