YORK- Subrata Banerjee, 78, passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025 at York Hospital. Born on January 17, 1947, in Madhuban, Bihar, India, he was the eldest son of the late Hemanta Kumar and Anima (Chatterjee) Banerjee. Subrata earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering from Banaras Hindu University (BHU). As a BHU student, while he studied hard, he would often be found riding his bicycle to check out the latest hindi film.
Like many Indians in the 1970s, Subrata immigrated to the United States for higher education. He arrived in New York City on March 18, 1974 and worked as an electrical engineer full-time while studying for his Master’s in Business Administration at Brooklyn Polytechnic at night. His wife, Lopa, joined him in Brooklyn, following their marriage on January 22, 1976. He was a true romantic, gifting her with flowers, jewelry and singing her the most romantic bollywood songs (in his beautiful baritone voice). Lopa often tells the story of the time she sent him out to pick up a loaf of bread and carton of milk and instead he came home with diamond jewelry (but no bread or milk).
Subrata had a long and varied career in engineering, focused in the manufacturing sector. He worked at many prestigious companies such as: Mobil Chemical, Bausch and Lomb, Graham Packaging Company and finally retiring from The Hershey Company after more than four decades in the industry.
Subrata’s life revolved around his family. Despite a demanding work travel schedule, regardless of the distance, he would rush home every weekend to be with his two daughters (or “dots” as he affectionately referred to them). His daughters equally doted on him; and loved to play hairdresser and decorate his hair with all of their colorful barrettes. Later when his “dots” got older, they gifted him his beloved Pritilata, a bichon frise puppy, who would often be found carried in his arms while they took their daily walks.
Among his friends, Subrata was known for his dry sense of humor and always being ready to celebrate with a smile and a salty margarita on the rocks. From his “hero” brown leather jacket to his navy blue nehru suit, he was always impeccably dressed. Subrata was known to be a creative and an impulsive chef who could whip up a restaurant quality meal when he was struck by the urge for dahi vada or mughlai paratha. He inherited a love of music from his mother which he proudly passed on to his daughters, teaching them Rabindra Sangeet songs that they would perform together at cultural gatherings.
Subrata is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lopamudra (Mukherji) Banerjee; two daughters, Anuradha Banerjee and her husband, Evan Ubiera of Jersey City, NJ, and Nivedita Banerjee of Herndon, VA; grandson, Ishan Ubiera; a brother, Debabrata Banerjee and his wife, Supriti of Kolkata, India; and two nieces, Anita Goswami and Debashree Banerjee. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jayshree Goswami.
