Stewart R. Wagner, 90, of York; passed away at Autumn House East on May 13, 2024. He was the husband of the late Marie Wagner. They met cherry picking in which he would always help her pick the top of the trees.
Stewart “Lucky” was born in Jefferson, PA on June 13, 1933 to the late Ralph and Anna (Brenneman) Wagner. He was a barber for 36 years owning Wagner’s Barbershop in addition to the Old Homestead Inn in West York. He was also employed by South Pine Nightwear as a cloth cutter. Stewart served in the Army rising to the rank of Corporal during the Korean War from 1953-1955 and was stationed at Fort Gordon, GA and Schwabisch Hall, Germany.
Stewart and Marie loved to polka dance and travel. His family remembers him the most for fixing things and playing Santa Claus at Christmas parties. He was known for his quick wit and compassionate heart always willing to help others. He was a member of the Royal Fire Company and the BD Social Club, West York VFW Post 8951, Hanover Moose Lodge 227, White Rose Polka Club, Alpenrose German American Society, Reliance Fire Company, Western York County Democratic Club, and Spring Grove Historical Society.
Stewart was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Marie Wagner, and 7 brothers Daniel, Paul, Clyde, Earl, Robert, Charles, Philip, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Stewart is also survived by nieces Ruthann (Harold) Miller, Linda Shaffer, Gail (Rodney) Forry, Norma (Donald) Anstine, Joan Julius, Anna Bailey, Patsy (David) Smeltzer, Donna (Lyle) Mabry, and Jade (Ian) Sprenkle. Surviving nephews include Lee (Beverly) Wagner, Dennis (Sandy) Wagner, Rick (Martha) Wagner, Paul (Shirley) Wagner, Scott (Tonya) Wagner, Michael (Lisa) Smeltzer, Robert (Shmekia) Smeltzer, and Justin Smeltzer. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York with The Rev. Dr. Melinda M. LaMontagne officiating. A viewing will be from 9-10:00 AM Tuesday at the Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in York Road Cemetery, Hanover, PA with full Military Rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. Stewart’s funeral service will be webcast on his obituary page at www.HeffnerCare.com
