Stephen S. Gilbert

Listen to Obituary

Stephen Gilbert, a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, generosity, and deep love for his family and community.

Stephen was the beloved son of Michael R. Ketterman and the late Jean E. Ketterman, and was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Gilbert. He was preceded by his grandparents, Donald and Mildred Gilbert and Ervin and Evelyn Ketterman. He was also preceded in death by his cherished wife, Sharon Gilbert, with whom he shared many meaningful years and memories.

He is survived by his loving son, Shane Gilbert, and daughter-in-law, Brielle Gilbert; his cherished granddaughter, Lexi Gilbert; his sisters, Richelle Narber and Leslie Beecher-Piero; and his brothers, Michael Ketterman, Troy Ketterman, and David Gilbert. He is also survived by his aunts, Margie Behler and Linda Ness; sisters-in-law, Adriene Ketterman and Susan Brindle; brothers-in-law, Robert Narber, David Brindle, Steven Worley, and Lou Piero; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.

Stephen will be remembered for his big heart and unwavering loyalty. He was always willing to lend a hand and took great pride in caring for his family. He had a special love for dogs—especially his golden retrievers—and could often be found handing out treats to neighborhood dogs. I gave him the nickname “Dog Whisperer” since he was rarely without dogs by his side. His selflessness and constant support meant so much to those who knew and loved him.

A proud graduate of West York High School, Stephen was an All-Star athlete who excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He continued his education at Williamsport Area Community College, earning a degree as a Heavy Duty Equipment Operator. This led to a long and successful 40-year career as Parts Manager at Worley Equipment/Plaster Equipment, where he was respected for his hard work and dedication.

Stephen had a deep love for the outdoors and took great pride in maintaining lawns and landscaping. He especially cherished time spent at Raystown Lake with his wife and son, where they created lasting memories boating and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. He also looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Canada, a tradition he deeply enjoyed and anticipated each year, spending time on the water and making lasting memories with those close to him.

A lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, Stephen attended many games in both the old and new stadiums and built an impressive collection of memorabilia. Sundays during football season were spent cheering on the Cowboys, sharing the excitement with family and friends. His passion for the team was unwavering and something he loved sharing with those around him.

Baseball was at the heart of Stephen’s life. For 30 years, he was a cornerstone of the Shiloh/Vikings Central League Baseball team, playing, managing, and maintaining the field. He organized fundraisers, ran the concession stand, and devoted countless hours behind the scenes to support the program, driven by his love for the game and the community. He also competed in several York Colonial Tournaments, earning respect as a player and leader, including being named Pitcher of the Tournament during one Labor Day appearance.

Above all, Stephen was a devoted father, incredibly proud of his son Shane and always attending his football and baseball games. He was his son’s biggest supporter, present and encouraging in every moment.

Stephen’s life revolved around his family, baseball, his love for the Dallas Cowboys, and helping others. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and unwavering loyalty that will never be forgotten.
