RED LION-Shirley Marie (Fleishmann) Bowers was born in Baltimore on November 20, 1934, the daughter of the late Frederick and Anna (Orlich) Fleishmann. After her mother’s death, Shirley and her two sisters were welcomed into the family of their great-aunt, Frances Brown and Frances’ husband Richard. Shirley worked in Washington, DC as a young woman, where she met her husband of 67 years, Dan M. Bowers.
Shirley was an accomplished craftsperson who received many awards for her work in ceramics and stained glass. She operated her own ceramic studio in Fairfield, Connecticut for many years. In later years, Shirley single-handedly operated a clothing bank in York, which provided quality clothing collected from consignment shops to local nursing homes. She also did volunteer work for WITF Television, American Red Cross, Community Progress Council, and York Agency on Aging. She was renowned for her stellar baked goods and her ready smile.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dan on April 19, 2023. She leaves behind three treasured children: Christina Anne Lotito and her husband Dean of Dunstable, Massachusetts, Kathleen Margaret Bowers of Middletown, and Daniel Matthew Bowers and his wife Kathleen of Glen Rock; as well as grandchildren, Megan and Daniel Honeywell of Dunstable; and a sister, Lorraine Socha. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Parsons.
