Robert (Bob) L. Sabatino, 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Autumn House East in York, PA. He was the loving husband of Anita L. (Papson) Sabatino to whom he was married for 59 years.
Born December 2, 1933 in Wilkes-Barre, the son of the late Alphonso and Mary (Sangiuliano) Sabatino, Bob was a lifelong educator and counselor who helped countless students find their path. He began his career as a teacher at Union High School in New Jersey and then Elmer L. Meyers High School. After his graduate studies, he became a guidance counselor at Coughlin High School, and then coordinated academic advising and held administrative roles at Penn State University Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton campuses until his retirement.
Bob was an avid tennis player and a lifelong musician, playing both clarinet and saxophone. While proudly serving in the U.S. Army, he was invited to tour Europe as a hand-selected member of their jazz band with acclaimed musicians Don Ellis and Don Menza. He became a member of several local bands, including a personal favorite the Cino Paci Band, and was even called to play for visiting artists like Diana Ross and The Four Tops.
In addition to his loving wife, Bob is survived by his children –Maria Sabatino of York; Lisa and Michael Catalanello of York; Daniel Sabatino and his partner Jennifer Kelly of Easton; and eight grandchildren – Ethan, Noah, Grace, and Anna Catalanello; Angela, Matthew and wife Emily Sabatino; and Anthony and Christina Neddoff. Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Donald J. Sabatino.
Bob’s family will celebrate his life and legacy privately. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York is in charge of arrangements.
