Robert H. Gundlach, 86, of York, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Tribute at Black Hill, Germantown, MD. He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Kemberling) Gundlach of Everett, Bedford County, to whom he was married for 59 years.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 13, 2026, at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd, York. Officiating the service will be his pastor, the Rev. Deborah Shearer-Mahady. A visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
Born July 11, 1939, in York, York County, he was the son and eldest child of the late Robert L. and Mary A. (Schmid) Gundlach.
Mr. Gundlach graduated from William Penn Sr. High School in 1957. From 1957-1960, he pursued an apprenticeship as an electrician with Hardinge Manufacturing Co. while also taking courses towards an associate degree in electrical engineering part-time at The Pennsylvania State University, York Campus. From 1961 to 1991, he worked for GTE, first as a lineman and subsequently as a supervisor of facilities and construction.
Mr. Gundlach was a member of Mount Zion Lutheran Church. He was also active in multiple service communities throughout his lifetime. He was a life member of both the Keystone VHF Amateur Radio Club and Grantley Fire Company EMS, where he was a volunteer firefighter, ambulance attendant, and EMT. As a maker, tinkerer, and craftsman, he enjoyed spending time in his workshop thinking with his hands. He especially loved traveling with his wife. Together, they journeyed, cruised, and camped extensively.
Mr. Gundlach was preceded in death by his three sisters, Jean Taughinbaugh, Carol Burns, and Patricia Rudisill, all of York. He is survived by one daughter, Diane M. Burger and her husband, Thomas of Midland Park, NJ; one son, David J. Gundlach and his wife, Shirly Pezo of Montgomery Village, MD; three grandchildren, Nicole Kwilecki and her husband, Evan, Shannon Burger and Jonathan Gundlach; one brother, James Gundlach of York; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 2164 Mt. Zion Rd, York, Pa 17406.
