Pottsville- Robert D. Shuman, 78, of Pottsville passed away Wednesday at Lehigh Valley Medical Center, Allentown. He had been taken ill last week. Born in Reading, PA, on January 29, 1931, Robert was a son of the late Daniel O. and Elizabeth Reid Shuman. He attended Pottsville Area schools and graduated in 1949 from Pottsville High School. He studied for a year at the former Pottsville campus of Penn State University before enlisting in t he Army officer's candidate school at Fort Benning, GA. Upon his school completion, he was promoted to 2nd Luitenant. He was Korean War veteran. Bob also continued to serve his country as a member of the PA National Guard. He was a past commander of the Company C, 3rd Battalion, 109th Infantry, an armored unit located in Hometown. By the time he retired from the National Guard, he attained the rank of Major. Upon his return to the area, he was employed by the former Bell Telephone Company of PA. During his 35 year career, he rose to supervisor and worked in Lancaster, Lebanon and finally in Harrisburg until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Pottsville. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 1716, both of Harrisburg; past commander of American Legion and member of Pulaski Lodge 216 FA & M, both of Pottsville. Bob enjoyed reading and being especially knowledgeable in history and current events. He also enjoyed working on his computer and keeping in touch with his many friends and family. His greatest joy was his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, Grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Steinbrunn. He was the last member of his immediate family. Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Ossman Shuman, of Pottsville; two daughters, Deborah Reed, widow of Mark, of Schuylkill Haven, and Lisa Grabowski, wife of Joseph, Blandon, PA; his four sons, Daniel, husband of Brenda, of Minersville, Harold, husband of Jean Ann, Kurt, husband of Karen and Erik, companion of Lisa, all of Pottsville. Ten Grandchildren, Amy and Philip Reed, Christian and Jonathan Shuman, Vaughn Shuman, Jullian and Jaqueline Grabowski, Derek and Kyle Shuman and Erika Shuman; a Great Grandson, Hunter Reed; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday morning at 11:30 A.M. in Trinity Lutheran Church, 3rd & West Arch Streets, Pottsville.Reverend Darcy Reis will officiate. Friends may call on Sunday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Schlitzer-Allen-Pugh Funeral Home, 6th & West Market Streets, Pottsville and also on Monday morning from 10:30 A.M. until time of service at the church. Interment with military honors will be held in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Pottsville. Memorial contributions may be made to Pottsville/ Schuylkill Haven Area EMS, 320 North 9th Street, Pottsville, PA 17901.
