Homer L. Salzman, age 86, of York, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, with his loving wife by his side.
Homer was born at home on December 24, 1938, in Alton, Illinois, to Howard and Delores Salzman (later Snyder). A proud and decorated veteran, Homer served in the United States Army for 24 years, completing two tours in Vietnam. During his distinguished military career, he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and served as Commandant of the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Academy in Nuremberg, Germany, where he mentored and shaped the next generation of Army leaders. Throughout his service and beyond, Homer also answered a higher calling: serving as a Pentecostal preacher. Sharing the word of God and ministering to others brought him immense joy and purpose. His deep faith, compassion, and unwavering commitment to spreading God's love touched countless lives and stood as his proudest work.
Homer’s life was filled with laughter, kindness, and an enduring love for his family. He shared an especially close bond with his granddaughter, Katie. When Katie was a little girl, they would often take walks together to “check out the neighborhood,” a favorite tradition they shared. They spent countless hours side by side , strolling around the block, swinging in the yard, or, as Katie grew older, sitting and talking about life. In later years, he formed a special connection with Katie’s son, Asher, his great-grandson, and shared in his joy, laughter, and curiosity. Their relationships were full of love, pride, and the kind of closeness that spans generations.
Homer is survived by his wife, LaJeanne Salzman; his daughter, Deanna McCaleb; his sons, Larry Salzman and wife Cassy, and Frank Salzman and wife Jamie; his grandchildren, Katie Owings and husband Brandon, Anna Dubberly and husband Gage, Kyndall Salzman, Lynn Salzman, Trin Salzman, Jonathan Salzman, and Larry Salzman; and his great-grandson, Asher Owings. He is also survived by his brother, Gary Salzman and wife Jean, and his sister, Sandy Gillespie and husband Larry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Salzman and Delores Snyder; his stepfather, Don Snyder; and his son, Stanley Salzman.
A military interment with honors provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Prospect Hill Cemetery (Pennsylvania Avenue entrance), York, Pennsylvania. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York is assisting the family with the arrangements.
