Listen to Obituary

Peter Filus, 58, of Windsor Township, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, after a courageous 19-year battle with cancer.

Born on October 30, 1966, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Pete was the son of the late John and Anna (Skok) Filus. He graduated from Penn State University in 1990 with a degree in business but ultimately found his true calling in nursing. For more than 30 years, he served as a Licensed Practical Nurse—most recently with Manor Care North in York—caring for others with the same compassion, attentiveness, and optimism he brought to every aspect of his life.

Pete worked the night shift so he could spend his days being present with his children: driving them to school and sports practices, attending youth group and church events, and always making time for an unexpected adventure. He was a man of quiet determination and persistent positivity, even through the many trials of his illness.

Pete loved the simple joys of life: a picnic with family, a day on the boat at Codorus State Park, or a road trip to quirky roadside attractions across the country. He had a particular fondness for offbeat landmarks, including Pinky the Elephant in Wisconsin, the World’s Largest Buffalo in North Dakota, and the Giant Potato Masher in Plover—and he had the photos to prove it. An avid hobbyist photographer, Pete was always capturing memories, from unplanned travel stops and sunsets at the lake to candid moments with his grandkids.

In 2023, Pete was blessed with a second chance at love when he married Lisa M. (Miller) Filus. Together they shared a joyful and active life—boating, hiking, bike riding, and watching travel shows like Island Life, dreaming of their next adventure.

Pete lived with cancer for nearly two decades, but he never let it define him. He was always planning for the future—renovating his home, saving family heirlooms and making travel plans even as his health declined. He didn’t dwell on illness. He focused on living. He loved life deeply and lived it fully every day.

He passed away on his and Lisa’s second wedding anniversary—a day he had told her he was determined to reach. It was one last promise kept.

Pete is survived by his wife Lisa; four children: Zachary, Jeremy, Lauren (and her husband Dominick), and Emily (and her husband Justin); four grandchildren: Evelyn, Joseph, Theodore, and Lillian; his brother Stephen Filus and his wife Patricia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Filus.

A celebration of life service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 161 N. Main Street in Red Lion, with a visitation from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

The Reverend Equilla Curry will officiate. Burial will be private at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place is assisting the family with the arrangements. Send condolences @ HeffnerCare.com
