DOVER - Nicholas V. Cretu, 73, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at his home. He was the loving husband of the late Mary E. (Keeny) Cretu with whom he shared 52 years of marriage.
Born April 19, 1952, in Baltimore, Maryland, Nicholas was the son of the late Vergil T. and Martha M. (Wise) Cretu. He was a graduate of Overlea High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve as a medic. Following his service, Nicholas built a career in sales, where his strong work ethic and perseverance were evident.
Nicholas had a deep love for the country and found his greatest peace in the woods. If he wasn’t hunting, you could often find him outdoors walking his daughter’s dogs at Pretty Boy Reservoir or Lake Redman, places that brought him joy and calm. He also enjoyed spending time at New Freedom Armory and being part of the Izaak Walton League of America, York Chapter #67.
He was a jokester at heart, someone who brought lightness and laughter into everyday life. Above all, Nicholas cherished his children and the relationships that meant the most to him, including his very best friend, Mary Malanowski. He was a quiet, steady presence—the kind of father who showed his love through small, meaningful gestures. He never missed a birthday or holiday card, always taking the time to write how proud he was. He instilled in his children the importance of passion and resilience.
Though life presented him with many physical challenges over the years, Nicholas never stopped trying. He faced each setback with determination, continuing to fight even when his body made it difficult. To those who knew him best, he was a silent supporter—loving his family fiercely and unconditionally to the very end.
Nicholas is survived by his daughter, Staci Cretu and her husband, Frank Ciccocioppo; his son, Brandon Cretu; his sister, Joanne Morris and her husband, Charles; and his nephews, Tyler and Charles Morris.
While his passing leaves an unimaginable void, there is comfort in knowing he is now at peace and reunited with his beloved wife.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road in York, is honored to serve the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Living Kindness Fund, created in honor of his beloved wife, to support caregivers and individuals facing serious illness—reflecting the compassion, resilience, and quiet strength that defined his life. LivingKindnessFund.com
