Nancy L. (Bentzel) Herbst

YORK- Nancy L. (Bentzel) Herbst, 75, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2026 at her home where she wanted to be. She was the loving wife of Dennis L. “Denny” Herbst. The couple wed on December 6, 1967.

A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 12:00 PM Sunday, January 18, 2026 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York with certified celebrant, Allison Duke, officiating. Prior to the service, a viewing will be held from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. The service will be livestreamed around 12:00 PM at HeffnerCare.com on Nancys obituary. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.

Nancy's adventure on this earth began on December 14, 1950 in York. She was the daughter of the late Dorothy Mae (Douglas) Bentzel and James S.A. Bentzel, II. Nancy used her seventy-five years on this earth wisely. In her younger years, a lot of time was spent at Flo-De-On campground where she camped with her family many weekends. The trips to Ocean City were plenty with Denny and their two kids and continued annually for many years after their grandkids were born. Boating, fishing, crabbing and just laying on the beach were always favorite past times.

When not out on a vacation adventure, you could find Nancy shopping at the Goodwill stores or mapping out every yard sale in town. At home she enjoyed cooking the family-favorites, spending time with her family and talking on the phone.

Nancy worked odd jobs here and there in her younger years, but her real pride was when she could stay home to watch her grandkids. After they were grown and she had a break from childcare for awhile, she didn't hesitate to start over again with watching a great grandchild. She held that "babysitter" title until the day she left us.

In addition to her husband Denny, Nancy is survived by a son, Dennis L. Herbst, III of York; a daughter Lisa L. (Bentzel) Schaeffer (Jeffery) of Glenville; five grandchildren, Justin Delle (Dana) of York, Jennifer Schaeffer (Joe) of York, Victoria Allison (Colton) of Spring Grove, Katie Shoff of York, and Jensen Delle (Dakota) of Spring Grove; seven great grandchildren, Anna, Declan, Justin Jr., Landen, Crue, Rhett, and Vada. Nancy was excitedly awaiting the birth of another great grandchild and her first great great grandchild that are on the way. She is also survived by a brother, Raymond C. Bentzel, of York. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Sally Ann Rohrbaugh, Carolyn “Carmie” Forbes, Janet Dell and Linda Weaver; and a brother James S.A. Bentzel, III.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the York County SPCA, 3159 N Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17406. Nancy always loved to help any animal in need.
