Mary Philomena Mokris

Dr. Mary Philomena Mokris, 66, of York, passed away Tuesday, April 28, 2026 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was the wife of Khaled Madoui with whom she shared 27 years of marriage.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, May 4, 2026 at Holy Infant Church, 535 Conewago Creek Road, Manchester with her Priest, The Rev. Olusola Adewole, O.P. officiating. A viewing will be held from 12-1:00 PM Monday at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Road, York. Burial will be in Holy Saviour Cemetery. Mary was born on June 7, 1959 in Queens, New York City; a daughter of the late Joseph and Mildred M. (Yedinak) Mokris. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Columbia University, a master’s from the University of Chicago, and a doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For more than 20 years, Dr. Mokris was a Manager at Kumon North America. She led Kumon’s Reading Department, and worked to develop and revise the reading curriculum, which covers materials from preschool to high school. Dr. Mokris was a regular presenter at conferences and symposiums, and had published numerous articles in a variety of academic publications.

In addition to her husband Kal, Mary is survived by her brother, Joseph A. Mokris of York; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark and Christopher Mokris.
