RED LION- Kehl R. Berry, 77, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on October 26, 2026. Born in York, Pennsylvania, on May 16, 1949, he was the son of the late John W. ‘Jake’ Berry and Elsie V. (Wilson) Berry.
Kehl was a proud graduate of West Nottingham Academy in Maryland, Class of 1967. In 1972, Kehl met the love of his life, Deborah (Haggett) Berry, in Boston. The two were married in 1976 and returned to the York area in 1978 to raise a family together. Kehl dedicated over 30 years of hard work to EQ - The Environmental Quality Company (formerly Envirite) in York.
Kehl was undeniably the center of any gathering, armed with a captivating charm, an endless supply of humorous stories from his life, and an arsenal of (often inappropriate) jokes. His phenomenal sense of humor never faded, and he was making his family laugh from his jokes in his final days at the hospital. Kehl was also a master chef, having inherited the cooking gene from his mother, Elsie.
Kehl was a great lover of animals, taking in numerous dogs and stray cats with Deb over the years. He was an avid bird watcher and feeder, spending much of his retirement trying to maintain a delicate peace treaty between his beloved feathered friends and the many stray cats he and Deb adopted.
Kehl is now happily reunited with his beloved wife, Deb, who passed away in 2025. He is survived by his two sons, Nathaniel and Andrew; his daughter, Andrea; and his four adored grandchildren: Johanna, Chase, Kehleigh, and Sophia. He is also survived by his sister, Brenda J. Daniels, and his brother, Jeffrey W. Berry. Kehl was preceded in death by his brother, Edward G. Berry, who passed away in 2009.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Kehl’s dear friend, Sue Thompson. Brought together by the shared grief of losing their spouses, they forged a beautiful, close bond that brought Kehl immense comfort and joy in his final chapter. Sue was a steadfast presence by his side, caring for him through his health ailments in his final year.
Memorial contributions may be made to Special Olympics Pennsylvania, 270 Walker Dr., Suite 210, State College, PA 16801, www.SpecialOlympicsPA.org
A private joint remembrance and celebration of both Kehl and Deb’s lives will be forthcoming.
