Dr. Kathryn Ann (Foley) LaNoue, 84, of Hershey, passed peacefully at York Hospital Friday, April 5, 2019. Dr. LaNoue was born in Camden, NJ on December 21, 1934, the daughter of the late Joseph and Evelyn (Vanderslice) Foley. A graduate of Bryn Mawr College, A.B. in Chemistry and of Yale University, Ph.D in Biochemistry, she served as a professor of Physiology at Penn State Hershey College of Medicine (COM) for more than 35 years, and retired as Emeritus Professor of Cellular and Molecular Physiology in 2012. During her tenure at the COM, she received the Faculty Scholar Award for Outstanding Achievement in Life and Health Sciences, the Distinguished Professor Award, and the Achieving Women Award. Dr. LaNoue’s distinguished research career resulted in a number of major accomplishments that prompted invitations to present her work at prestigious institutions in this country and around the world. During her travels, she did a sabbatical at University of Oxford, England, worked at University of Frankfurt, Germany for a summer and spent two summers in Kuwait as an advisor after the Iraq war. Dr. LaNoue’s service to professional societies and the University included the Women in Physiology Committee; the American Physiological Society; the College of Medicine Medical Selection Committee; the University Graduate Council; the College of Medicine Promotion and Tenure Committee; and Co-Chair of the Women’s Faculty Group of the College of Medicine and the Hershey Medical Center. She was on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals, wrote reviews for National Institutes of Health, served as a member of numerous grant review committees and served as an advisor for the American Heart Association. Dr. LaNoue balanced her professional career with raising a family of four children. She leaves two sons, Alcide “Al” LaNoue of York and George Edwin “Ed” LaNoue and his wife Amy of Boiling Springs; two daughters, Claire LaNoue of Dallastown and Michele LaNoue Spicher of Harrisburg; ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York, with a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Chaplain Brian Watson will be officiating at the service.
