John O. "Jack" Wright

YORK- John Officer “Jack” Wright, 86, passed away at home on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. He was the loving husband of Wilma M. (McEwan) Wright for 64 years.

Born on August 20, 1938 in Shotts, Scotland, he was the son of the late John O. and Jeanie (Cain) Wright. Jack was a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer, graduated from college in Scotland, and obtained 49 patents throughout his career. Prior to locating to York, he worked as an Engineer at Micro Switch in Freeport, Illinois, eventually working for Osram Sylvania in Warren, Pennsylvania, and York, Pennsylvania, where he was head of new product development up until the time of his retirement.

Jack was widely described as a “Renaissance man” who could fix almost anything, and who came up with unique and creative ways to do so. His hobbies included painting, woodworking, and furniture making. As soon as you walked into Jack and Wilma’s home, you were surrounded by grandfather clocks and stained glass works. Earlier in life, he spent time acting and building sets in local theatre productions and also playing the bagpipes. Jack was known for his dry and witty sense of humor. He was a member of Evergreen Lodge #170 and the Valley of Freeport, both located in Freeport, Illinois.

Along with his wife, Wilma, Jack is survived by his son, Gregor Wright, and his wife, Carissa of Easton, Pennsylvania; two daughters, H. Allison Wright and her companion, James Norton, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Leslie Walther and her husband, Michael, of Sussex, Wisconsin; five grandchildren, Graeme Wright, Colin Wright, Jenna Walther, Casey Fenner and her husband, Hayden, and Rachel Walther; and his cherished Yorkie, Zoe. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy McCafferty.

He will be deeply missed by his family, but we will take pleasure in viewing the many pieces of fine art that he created and we will always think lovingly about the man who created them.

Memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA, 3159 N. Susquehanna Trail, York, PA 17406.

At the request of the family, no service will be held. However, a celebration of Jack’s life will take place at a later date. Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York is in charge of arrangements.
