Joann Spangler

YORK - Joann Marie (Diehl) Spangler, 89, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026 at Amoroso Wellness at York. She was married to the love of her life, the late Elwood C. “Woody” Spangler for 63 years.

Joann was born in York on February 24, 1936 to the late Gladys (Sprenkel) and Austin Eugene Diehl. She attended Aldersgate Church for many years and Living Word Community Church for the past 15 years.

Her life was rich with love and experiences. She loved jewelry, so working at the Leon Ness Jewelry Barn was a dream come true. Her favorite color was sparkle. One of her greatest joys was to travel the world with Woody collecting treasures and memories. They were fortunate to have visited 98 countries together. Joann embraced her German heritage and she and Woody were members of the German American Society of York-Alpenrose and danced with York Oberbayern Volkstanzgruppe and White Rose Polka Dancers. She worshipped the sun spending summers at Wisehaven Pool and her happy place was Ocean City NJ.

She is survived by two daughters, Krista (Jim) Stambaugh of York, PA, and Karla (Glenn) Gannett of Greenville, NC. She was lovingly known as “Oma” to four grandchildren, Erika North of Malta, NY, Erin (Kyle) Ring of Downingtown, PA, Austin (Amy) Gannett of Greenville, NC, Kamille Gannett of Greenville, NC and 7 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd., York, with Chaplain Don Alspaugh officiating. A visitation will be held from 9-10 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home.
