Jane A. (McCleary) Smeltzer, 80, of East Prospect, passed away at Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation on Monday, July 20, 2026. She was the wife of the late Robert K. “Shorty” Smeltzer, to whom she was married for 43 years before his passing in 2007.
Jane was born on January 6, 1946 at home in Wrightsville, a daughter of the late Charles F. and Mary J. (Fisher) McCleary. After graduating from Eastern York High School, Jane entered the workforce and held several positions before finding her home at York Hospital. She worked in Physician Billing for 19 years, retiring in 2009. In retirement, Jane enjoyed spending her days curled up in her chair with a good book or a challenging word search. When she wasn't reading, she loved playing cards with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were truly the apple of her eye.
Jane is survived by her son, James A. and wife Karen Smeltzer of Red Lion; a daughter, Nancy L. Russell of East Prospect; three grandchildren, Ashley Smith, Allison Adams, and Miracle Moody; two great grandchildren, Lucas and Lilah Smith; a brother, John and wife Josie McCleary of York; three sisters, Janet and husband Jay Freed of York, Susan Lightner of Dallastown, and Mary “Faye” Lewis of Allentown; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by nine siblings, Dale Fisher, Richard McCleary, Jesse McCleary, Norman Keller, Thelma Sowers, Ruth Deckman, Alice Lockner, Allen McCleary, and Viola McCleary.
A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, July 27, 2026 at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with Celebrant Amy Favorito officiating. A viewing will be held from 9 – 11:00 AM Monday at the Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Springville Cemetery in Craley.
