George G. Smith, Jr., 78, died April 1, 2009 at Misericordia Convalescent Home, after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Almarie Smith. George was born August 28, 1930 in Frederick, MD to the late George G. & Janie E. (White) Smith. He graduated from Lincoln High School and completed his sophomore year at Maryland State College when he was drafted into the military. After serving two years as a Military Policeman he moved to York, PA and stayed with relatives. In York, he met his wife Almarie Smallwood to whom he had been happily married for 49 years. They had one daughter, Angela D. (Smith) Grayson. George was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Frederick, MD and Bethel A.M.E. Church, York where he was a Trustee for many years. His professional experience consisted of working 22 years for the York City Police Department mainly as a Juvenile Detective. He also worked for the York City School District 10 years as an Attendance Officer. After retiring from the Police Department he became a Deputy Sheriff and worked in that capacity until poor health forced him to quit working. George attended many schools & colleges for extensive training during his career and received numerous certificates and awards. He loved children and sports, and because of this love he always tried to help any child who got in trouble and came before him in his capacity as a Juvenile Officer. Also, because of his love for children and sports he was a coach for Little League Softball for ten years in York County. His memberships consisted of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Fraternal Order of Police, American Legion Post 127, AARP, American Red Cross & the former York Civic Organization. George is survived by a daughter, Angela Grayson, two granddaughters Erin M. & Shanell R. Grayson and a great-grandson, Ja'Colby M. Grayson, all of York. Also surviving is one sister, Dorothy M. Onley of Frederick, MD; two nephews, Patrick Onley of Baltimore, MD and Perry Onley of Frederick; two nieces, Natalie Brown and husband Terry of Frederick and Nannette Hobson and husband, Lee of Cory, NC; two cousins, the Honorable Marie White Bell of Burlington, NJ and Alfoster Johnson and wife Carol of York. A large loving extended family of nieces and nephews on his wife's side of the family were too numerous to list by name separately. A Memorial Celebration of Life Service will be held 12 pm Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 356 W. Princess Street, York, with his Pastor Katherine E. Rose officiating. The viewing will be private. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens with Flag Presentation by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
