WINDSOR – Freeland Earl Shaffer, 93, of Windsor Township, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022 at York Hospital. He was the husband of the late Kathleen (Colestock) Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Deep Run, MD on June 16, 1929, the son of the late Earl J. “Jack” and Marie G. (Sterner) Shaffer. He retired from Red Lion High School in 1987, where he worked for 36 years. He began his career there as a chemistry and physics teacher and then later the Science Department Chairman. He was also involved with the Fly-tying Club and Photography Club for the yearbook at Red Lion High School. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Red Lion, PA. He was also a member of PA Association of School Retiree’s, Starview Sportsman’s Club, and the NRA. He was a past member of Izaak Walton League of America. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg, his Master’s degree in Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He attended the University of Maine, Montana State University and an in-service program at Millersville University for all continuing education credits in chemistry. He received an award presented by the Chemical Industry Council of Eastern PA in 1970 for Outstanding High School Teacher, as well as Whalen Memorial High School Chemistry Teacher Award in 1971, presented by the Southeastern PA Section of American Chemical Society. He was also one of ten finalists for outstanding teacher award in 1980. He enjoyed fly fishing, turkey hunting and woodworking. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals since age 8.
Mr. Shaffer leaves a son, Scott Shaffer and his wife Karen of Jacobus; a daughter, Marci Campos of Windsor; and a granddaughter, Anne Elizabeth Shaffer. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Leonard Campos, a sister, Jean Resh, and an infant brother.

There will be a private burial in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York. Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place in Red Lion is assisting with the arrangements.
