Lincolnton, NC- Erma A. (Rohrer) Edwards Davenport Greene, 93, entered into her eternal rest on June 25, 2025. She was the wife of the late Reverend J. Belvin Greene and was preceded in death by husbands, Wayne Davenport and Lyle I. Edwards.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 2 p.m. on July 12, 2025 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 1551 Kenneth Rd. in York, with a visitation from 1-2 p.m. Committal will be in Kreutz Creek Cemetery in Hellam.
Mrs. Greene was born in Pasadena, CA on June 10, 1932, the daughter of the late David E. and Lottie (Smith) Rohrer. Erma was born into a lineage of mission-hearted people. In 1909, her grandfather, on her mother's side, S.R. Smith, was the founder and president of the Messiah Bible School and Missionary Training Home, associated with the Brethren in Christ church. The school stands today as Messiah University in Mechanicsburg, PA.
Her family and parents' missional call to India was a great influence on Erma's upbringing. Many years later, Erma embarked on a mission trip to New Guinea with the Touching Lives for Christ organization, associated with the Hobe Sound Bible Church, in Hobe Sound, Florida.
Erma's heart to serve the Lord was expressed through her many creative talents and gifts, which included drawing, writing, singing, and playing the organ and piano. Early in her teen years, she dedicated her gift of playing the piano only to sacred music.
She brought up her children and grandchildren around the piano, teaching them about the love of Jesus. Over the years, she would travel as a song evangelist to many churches and revivals. She wrote many poems about living a life for Christ and composed many songs, choruses, and melodies in her lifetime.
Mrs. Greene had 6 children and leaves three daughters, H. Lucy Carpenter and her husband Dave of Newark, OH, Nadene Tudon of San Antonio, TX, and Lyla Shillington and her husband Neil of Hobe Sound, FL; two sons, David Edwards of East Canton, OH and Steve Edwards of Stuart, FL; a daughter-in-law, Loretta Edwards of Ohio; 16 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard Edwards, a granddaughter, Ramona Tudon, and a son-in-law, Miguel Tudon.
