YORK - Edwin Richard Jacobus, 97, passed away on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at Country Meadows of York. He was the husband of the late Shirley Anne (Reich) Jacobus, to whom he was married to for 59 years before her passing on February 19, 2007. They loved spending time together, especially when they went out bowling. Born on January 27, 1921 in Newark, NJ, he was a son of the late Adam Jakubowski and the late Helen (Zurkowska) Jakubowski. Mr. Jacobus served in the Air Force for 30 years until his retirement in 1971. He reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and proudly served his country. He attended Lafayette College where he was a Phi Delta Theta fraternity member and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology. He was a passionate athlete who played baseball and basketball throughout college and during his time in the military service. After retiring, he loved to go on nature walks, read, garden, and create stained glass artwork. Mr. Jacobus spent many hours at the York YMCA playing racquetball and he avidly watched every Baltimore Orioles game. He loved spending time with his family and was a devouted grand and great grandfather. Mr. Jacobus is survived by two sons, Richard Jacobus of York, PA, and Russell Jacobus and wife, Donna of Chapin, SC; two daughters, Kathy Vasilas and husband, Ronald of Ellicott City, MD, and Lori Cunningham and husband, Jesse IV of Abingdon, MD; two brothers, Richard Jakubowski of NJ, and Walter Jakubowski of NJ and FL; 5 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Michael Jacobus, and grandson, Jason Daly. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the York YMCA, 90 N Newberry Street, York, PA 17401 or to the Small Miracles Cat & Dog Rescue, 10236 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042, from where Lori and Jesse’s beloved dog ‘Pickles’ was rescued. Services will be held at a later date.
