Dr. William H. Payne

DALLASTOWN – Dr. William H. Payne, 75, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 2nd at his home. By his side was his loving wife, Alice (McCall) Payne, with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10 A.M., Monday, December 11th at his church, Christ Lutheran Church (126 W. Main Street) in Dallastown with the Rev. Patti Bream officiating. Burial will follow at Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 4 - 6 P.M. on Sunday, December 10th at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion.

Born December 28, 1947 in York, a son of the late Elwood H. and H. Elizabeth (Kilgore) Payne, he was a 1965 graduate of Dallastown Area High School and a 1969 graduate of Gettysburg College. Dr. Payne earned his dental degree from Temple School of Dentistry in 1973. He practiced dentistry alongside his exceptional and beloved longtime staff in Red Lion for 45 years, retiring in 2018. Dr. Payne was an active member, treasurer, and president of the York County Dental Society. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the Hoodner Clinic, which provided low-cost dental care to those in need.

He was an avid reader and student of history. He loved the game of golf which he played as a true purist, always walking the course, carrying his bag and finishing the last putt on every hole. He was a member of the Felton Hunting Camp and enjoyed the outdoors in all seasons. A few of his favorite pastimes were cross-country skiing, archery hunting whitetails, turkey hunting in Centre County, pheasant hunting with his German Shorthaired Pointers, and countless walks in the woods with his children and grandchildren.

His most precious moments were spent as the passionate fan of his children and grandchildren in their academic, athletic, and personal pursuits, imparting the values of integrity, hard work, and perseverance in all things great and small.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Payne leaves a legacy of abundant fruitfulness through two daughters, a son and 14 grandchildren; Sarah P. and husband Andrew Smith of Arnold, MD and children Ava M. and Leyton W.; Emily P. and husband David Robertson of Landisburg, PA and children Juliana G., Josie L., Evelyn F., and Baby Robertson; Eric W. and wife Julianne Payne of Dallastown and children Reagan W., Jackson S., Calvin D., Annemarie K., Lincoln A., Grant W., Theodore J., and William J.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to many friends and caregivers for their prayers, love, and support in recent months. Memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Payne’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association www.alz.org or Christ Lutheran Church in Dallastown.
