Dale George Fair

YORK - Dale George Fair, 77, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on December 19, 1948, Dale was a true son of York. He grew up on West Street forming long-standing childhood friendships and attended William Penn High School, from which he graduated in 1966 as the Valedictorian. Nicknamed “Worm”—short for “bookworm” —he continued his education at Millersville University, where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Pi Honor Fraternity. He graduated Magnum Cum Laude from Millersville in 1970 with a degree in elementary education and then obtained his master’s degree in education from McDaniel College (Western Maryland) in 1976.

For 40 years, Dale demonstrated his dedication to learning, devoting his career to educating young minds as an elementary school teacher in Spring Grove School District. Generations of students and colleagues, many of whom were his closest friends, came to know him as a patient, caring educator genuinely committed to instilling a love of learning into the lives he touched. He belonged to the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) and National Education Association (NEA).

A kind and gentle man, you would never hear Dale raise his voice unless he was cheering for his Philadelphia Phillies or Eagles. He was always there to offer a sweet treat, provide you with a personalized, curated envelope of coupons for anything you needed, or chime in with the answer to an obscure crossword puzzle clue. He loved to watch dirt track racing and could tell you the splits and winners from recent sprint car races, which he meticulously recorded in his notebook. Dale was also an avid music aficionado with an expansive taste in music and equally prolific vinyl collection. He was known to jam out to the Beatles, Credence Clearwater Revival, Mamas and the Papas, Broadway musical soundtracks, and much to the chagrin of his wife, ABBA and Bob Dylan. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends, Carol and Lee, and was able to visit nearly all 50 states. He also enjoyed cheering on his grandkids at their soccer games. His family was the center of his life, and he took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow. Time spent with them was among his greatest joys.

Dale is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Barbara Ann Fair (Spencer); his children, Shannon Fair Reefer (Jason) and Justin Fair (Kimberly); and his cherished grandchildren, Ella (13) and James Reefer (10), and Jovie (5) and Sadie Fair (2). He was preceded in death by his parents, Israel George and Gladys Mae (Allshouse) Fair, his sister, Marlene Joyce (Fair) Kornbau, and his cousin, Esther Hannah Shearer, who was like a sister to him.

Dale lived a life defined by kindness, patience, and dedication to others. Those who knew him will remember his gentle spirit, quiet strength, intelligence, silly nature, strong character, and his ability to make those around him feel valued and cared for. He approached life with humility and compassion and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend.

He will be deeply missed, but his memory will be cherished always. His family takes solace in envisioning him walking, unencumbered, down to Electric Avenue, reading a printed newspaper, completing the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle, drinking a diet Dr. Pepper, and enjoying Martin’s Kettle Cooked Potato Chips and a big bowl of ice cream.

A Celebration of Dale’s life will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Heffner Funeral Chapel, 1551 Kenneth Road in York with Deacon Folkemer-Leonard, from St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, where Dale was a lifelong member, officiating. Prior to the service there will be a visitation from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM. A private burial ceremony will take place after the service at Greenmount Cemetery.
