YORK- Charles Edward “Ed” Wherley of York, age 91, passed peacefully on April 19, 2026. He was born on June 25, 1934 in York, PA to Russel A. Wherley and Mildred E. (Blauser) Wherley. He was married to Kathryn L. (Hoffman) Wherley who predeceased him in 2013. He was also predeceased by both of his parents and his granddaughter, Elizabeth F. Ferriter.
A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Living Word Community Church, 2530 Cape Horn Rd, Red Lion with Pastor Aaron Kunce officiating the service. Viewings will be held from 6-8:00 PM Friday at Life Tributes by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion and from 10-11:00 AM Saturday at the church. The service will be livestreamed around 11:00 AM at HeffnerCare.com on Ed's obituary page. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
During his career Ed worked for 40 years at the former GTE Telecom where he became a supervisor before his retirement in 1992. Ed enjoyed sports, cars, flying hot air balloons with friends, swimming and riding bicycles and motorcycles. Ed was part of a group who taught kids how to play tennis and was also a director and coach in the little league. He also enjoyed bowling and when he was 73 and 75 bowled two 300 games. Above anything else, Ed was most proud of his children and cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ed leaves behind three children Barbara W. Ferriter (David), Barry E. Wherley (Dawn Miller) and Bonnie S. Hartman (Michael); along with 11 grandchildren, Brandon M. McWilliams (Kim), Stephanie R. Pappas (James), Caitlin C. Ferriter (Wes), Bianca C. Myers (Eric McNeil), Russell C. Hartman (Tabitha), Barry E. Wherley II, Meghan A. Ferriter, Samuel E. Wherley (Liz), Joshua S. Hartman (Amy), Stefan M.R. Hartman (Laurie) and Amy Billet (Robert Henkel). He has 14 great grandchildren: Roarke, Keagan and Tesni Marchand, Parker and Lucy Pappas, Isabella Wherley, Dylan McNeil, Kenley and Clara McWilliams, Allyson (Ezekial) Valdez, Austin (Ally) Hartman, Jordana and Max Hartman, and Aron DeWees, as well as two great, great grandchildren: Madeline and Julian Hartman. He also leaves behind his brother, Richard G. Wherley (Betty) as well as nieces and nephews.
