Charles Luther Vernon, 88, of York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026 surrounded by his loving family and companion. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Plowman) Vernon with whom he was married to for 49 years before her passing.
A Celebration of Life Tribute Service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 10, 2026 at Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with Allison Duke officiating. A visitation will be held from 9-10:00 AM Friday at the Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Vernon was born on January 1, 1938 in Shrewsbury, a son of the late Edward H. Vernon, Sr. and G. Beryl (Pafford) Vernon. He was a 1955 graduate of Dallastown Area High School. Following high school, Charles attended barber school. He then went on to work for Shaull Oldsmobile and Beasley Ford before starting his own business, Vernon Auto & Camping Center. Mr. Vernon went on to run his business for over 55 years until his passing. In his free time, he enjoyed traveling to the Outer Banks, to over 20 countries, and camping with his family. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Mr. Vernon is survived by a son, Chad and wife Christine Vernon of York; a daughter Brenda and husband Edward Ellis of York; three grandchildren, Shelby Vernon, Jason Ellis and fiancé Jenn Rhine and son Hudson, and Lindsey Ellis-Thomas and husband Dylan Thomas; and two great-grandchildren Lily Thomas and Mason Thomas; as well as two nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, and his brother Edward H. Vernon, Jr.
