Betty S. Reid, 97, of Windsor, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at her home. She was the wife of the late Dan B. Reid, Sr. who passed away on October 24, 1984.
Born Elizabeth Sysak in Peckville, Lackawanna Co. (near Scranton), she was the daughter of the late John and Nellie (Harralchak) Sysak. Betty graduated from Olyphant High School, Class of 1946. During her high school days, she worked for her aunt and uncle in New York City while on summer break.
Betty worked as a wrapper layer at various cigar companies in the Red Lion area. Those companies included Herb Smith and Harry Herman (Windsor), Clark Jacobs (Red Lion), and Brogue Cigar Co. She was a high producer of cigars averaging 6500 cigars a day with only 15-18 throwaways. Betty worked in those companies for 30 years. She then moved on to Olin Industries (Flinchbaugh) where she was a machine operator for 13 years making cones for missiles, retiring at age 62.
Her days in Scranton included a strong bond with her sister Barbara and her father who was a coal miner. She enjoyed, as most, pierogies, kielbasa, and loaded poppy seed rolls. Her early life was marred by her mother’s death from breast cancer at age 35.
Betty loved various activities such as bowling, and walking the track at Dallastown High School and Freysville Park. She played the piano in high school and enjoyed get togethers with her sister. Bus trips to Atlantic City with her friend, Ethel, were one of her favorite trips. Her earlier trips to Ocean City with family were also high on her list. On rainy days she loved to watch TV featuring Columbo, who she saw in Atlantic City when they were filming an episode; and golf (especially when Fred Couples was playing). At any moment’s notice, you could find her jumping on her lawn tractor to expertly manicure her property.
She is survived by a son, Dan, with whom she resided and was a caregiver. Additionally, Sharon Scurfield (Dan’s fiancé) who helped with caregiving. Also surviving are her grandsons, Jamie Reid, Travis and wife Stephanie Reid; great grandsons, Emerson, Everett, Elias, and Ezra; and nieces and nephews from her sister Barbara’s family. Proceeding her in death was a stepbrother, Paul Harralchak.
Among her greatest joys were her grandsons, who were twins. Her father was also a twin.
