Born July 29, 1955 in Stewartstown, he was a son of the late Arthur W. Sr. and Catherine L. (Sumrall) Mellinger. Mr. Mellinger was a 1973 graduate of Kennard-Dale High School, where he met his beloved wife. He was a member of Gospel Tabernacle Baptist Church in Jarrettsville, MD. For most of his working life, Art was a laborer at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, holding many roles until his retirement in 2018, after working there for over 30 years.

Outside of his hard work, he enjoyed taking trips anywhere with his family, finding joy in places like the Outer Banks and Disney World. Burkins and his wife Hannah and Allen E. King III and his fiancé Brandon; two great-grandchildren, Everly R. and Myles J. Burkins; a brother, Robert C. Mellinger and his girlfriend Pat; three sisters, Barbara L. Saylor and her husband Charles, Beverly A. Hershner, and Bonnie S. Wisner and her husband Tim; several nieces and nephews; as well as a bonus sister, Wanda Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur W. Sr. and Catherine L. Mellinger, as well as a brother-in-law, Charles S. Hershner, Sr.
