YORK-Anita Louise (Jones) Hennemann, 94 passed away on Friday, March 13, 2026 at Country Meadows Leader Heights in York. She was the beloved wife of the late Willard Walstrum Hennemann, Jr. and the late Thomas Schuerger.
Ms. Hennemann was born in Hagerstown, MD on January 12, 1932, the daughter of the late Evan Luther and Mary Anita (Leiter) Jones. As a child during the Great Depression, Louise attended a one-room school house with only one teacher instructing students in grades K-8 for five years. The eldest of four children, she began working to help support the family and raise her siblings while she was still a tween. Despite her humble beginnings and rudimentary early education, Louise managed to get straight A’s and graduate with honors from Hagerstown High School before matriculating at Towson State Teacher’s College (now Towson State University). She was the first member of her family to attend college.
At Towson State Louise met and married Willard “Bill” Hennemann, Jr., the father of her two children. She dropped out of college after her sophomore year to start a family. While raising her family and working as a substitute and eventually full-time teacher, she completed her education, earning Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees specializing in math education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1969 and 1974, respectively. She became an accomplished educator, retiring from Horace Mann Elementary School in Indiana, PA where she taught second grade for more than 20 years.
Louise and Bill were married for 37 years. After Bill’s death, Louise met and married Thomas Schuerger, to whom she was married for 29 years before being widowed a second time.
Ms. Hennemann was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society for Educators and the Pennsylvania affiliate of the National Education Association. She enjoyed reading, movies, the beach, boating, skiing, traveling and especially spending time with family and friends. She was a dedicated humanist and philanthropist, donating monthly to support charities including Save the Children, Doctors Without Borders, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Feeding America, UNICEF and many others. She was respected and loved by all who knew her and the world is a significantly poorer place in her absence.
Ms. Hennemann leaves two sons, Edward E. Hennemann and his wife Mary of York and Willard W. “Bill” Hennemann and his wife Michelle of Washington Crossing, PA; two step-sons, Mark and Matthew Schuerger; two step-daughters, Kathleen “Kate” Bradford and Pegaret Pichler; four grandchildren, Emily Smith, David Hennemann, Jeffrey Hennemann, and Nicole Hennemann; nine step-grandchildren; a great grandson, Cameron Smith; nine step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Jones; and a sister, Sonja Feiser and her husband Lee. She was preceded in death by a brother, Evan Luther Jones, Jr.
