YORK- Alvera Ruth (Hann) Smith, 79, passed away Friday, February 2, 2024 at Yorkview Nursing & Rehabilitation. She was the wife of John Robert Smith to whom she celebrated 32 years of marriage on November 30th.


Family and friends will be received from 10:00-11:00 AM Friday, February 9th, 2024 located at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc. in York. Burial will take place at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date.


Born September 8, 1944 in Everett, PA, she was a daughter of the late Ellis Charles and Erma Mae (Rohrer) Hann.


For most of her working life, Mrs. Smith was a secretary and administrative assistant at York Vo-Tech School. Outside of work, Mrs. Smith found passion in cooking and baking. She loved to prepare meals for her family and friends. She is remembered for cooking at a gourmet level and always memorizing every recipe. She also had a great talent for decorating and taking family photos. Alvera loved to go on cruises, taking long weekend trips, watching Penn State games and collecting angel figurines.


In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by a daughter, Michelle Mae Williams of York; two stepchildren, Jon R. Smith and his wife Karen, and Candice Smith; one granddaughter, Kelly Renee Sergent and her husband Stephen of Broadway, NC; four step grandchildren, Jon Sawyer Smith, Jack Corby, Rex Corby and Ginger Corby; a great-grandchild, Jade A. Sergent; and a sister Betty (Hann) Henry. She is preceded in death by her siblings James Hann, Charles Hann, Sarah Hann, Elsie Hann and Leone (Hann) Asper.
