RED LION – William A. Carlis, Sr., 88, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Dallastown Nursing Center. He was the husband of Sylvia K. Carlis who died April 10, 2008. They were married on June 1, 1946. A celebration of life tribute service will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with Deacon Dan Bernardy from St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dallastown officiating. A visitation will be held from 9-10:00 AM Thursday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Holy Saviour Cemetery with full military rites provided by York County Veterans Honor Guard. He was born February 7, 1924 in Ebervale, Luzerne Co., PA and was a son of the late Anthony and Henrietta Carlis. Mr. Carlis graduated from Hazel Twp. High School on June 10, 1941 and began working for Bethlehem Ship Co. in Baltimore, MD. He was inducted into the US Navy on July 17, 1943 and served as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class on the USS LSM 128. While serving in the Navy he received the Pacific Theater Ribbon with one star, American Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star. He was honorably discharged on April 26, 1946. Mr. Carlis then began a steamfitter apprenticeship and became a journeyman on July 1, 1952. He belonged to Steamfitter Local Union 420 of Philadelphia and worked at Johnson Service Co. in Philadelphia until his retirement in 1986. Mr. Carlis loved spending time with his grandchildren, golfing, playing cards and going to the casino, bowling, and gardening. He enjoyed watching Eagles and Notre Dame Football, was a member of Red Lion Senior Center, and had been previously been an active at Assumption BVM Catholic Church in Feasterville, PA and St. Joseph Catholic Church, York. Mr. Carlis is survived by a son, William A. Carlis, Jr. of Silver City, NM; a daughter, Del and husband Kim McChalicher of Red Lion; three grandchildren, Gary and wife Pamela McChalicher, Christopher and wife Cecily McChalicher, and Kendra and husband Zachary Proudfoot; two great granddaughters, Alexis and Ellen McChalicher; and a daughter in law, Lilly Virgil of Nevada City, CA. He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Carlis; four brothers, Leo, Vincent, Joseph, and Henry Carlis; and a sister, Rose Carlis.
