POTTSVILLE - Violet K. Starr, 88, formerly of Adamsdale Rd., and Pottsville, died at the Schuylkill Medical Center South Jackson on Thursday afternoon. Born in Pottsville on February 8, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Katie Shadle Schappell. She was a 1941 graduate of Pottsville High School. On February 19, 1944 she married the late Andrew J. Kolenick, Sr., who died in 1978. She was employed as one of Pottsville’s first Meter Maids working from 1961-1978 and she retired from Rest Haven as a Nurses Aid working in the men’s infirmary. On August 29, 1981 she married the late Earl Starr, who died in 2001. She was a member of the former First United Church of Christ, where she was a member of the choir. Violet loved flowers and gardening. She enjoyed playing Bingo, crossword puzzles and search word puzzles. Violet liked to read, and watching Notre Dame and Penn State Football. She loved her dog Scooter. Surviving Violet are: a son Andrew J. Kolenick, Jr., of Moorehead City, NC; a daughter JoAnn and her husband Edward Zuppert, Cressona, with whom Violet resided; four grandchildren, Colleen Frantz, Daniel Kolenick, Melissa Zuppert and Andrea Zuppert; four great grandchildren, Lucy, Alexyss, Ambur, Ethan, Kyra, Viktoreea and Christopher; three brothers, Howard Schappell, Klingerstown, Karl Schappell, Allentown, and Paul Schappell, Orwigsburg; four sisters, Helen Kraus, Cumbola, Mary Boyer, Blandon, Jane Jones, Pottsville, and Barb Staller, Pottsville; nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by: a daughter in law, Bernadette Kolenick, three sisters, Marian Brauch, Sara Wetzel, and Frances Chappell; three brothers, Bud, George and Earl Schappell. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1 PM from the Schlitzer Allen Pugh Funeral Home, Inc., 6th & W. Market St., Pottsville, with the Rev. Msgr. William Glosser officiating. Family and friends may call from the funeral home on Monday from noon until time of service from the funeral home. Interment will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, St. Clair.
