AVOCA-Nicholas Riley Chipko, 99, of Avoca, passed away Sunday evening at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Scranton, where he has been a guest for two years. Born in Duryea on December 16, 1911, he was a son of the late George and Anna Chipko. Riley worked as a coal miner for many years and later in life, he worked for Avis delivering cars. He was an avid NY Giants fan. In his younger years, he was a great fisherman and loved to go picking mushrooms. Riley was also a great dancer and loved traveling with his wife. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Avoca. Riley was preceded in death by a grandson, David Scott Shannon, a granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Shannon, a great granddaughter, Tara Ord, a sister, Mary Chipko and three brothers, John, George and Michael. Surviving is his loving wife of 71 years, Stacia (Supinski) Chipko, daughter, Jean Chipko Hughes, Avoca, a son, John G. Chipko and his wife, Diane, Bloomfield, NJ, three grandchildren, Sharon McPhillips, Nicole Shiner, John Jason Chipko, five great grandchildren, Veronica, Paul, Kristi, Kaitlyn and Matthew Ryan, 1 great great grandchild, Rhylan, brother, Jospeh Chipko, Duryea, a sister, Anna Komar, Duryea, and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Sheerer and the staff of the Linwood Nursing Center for their care and compassion. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM from the Kniffen OMalley Funeral Home, Inc., 728 Main Street, Avoca with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30AM in Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Avoca. Officiating will be Father Phillip J. Sladicka. Interment will be in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Moosic. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
