YORK- John P. Smith, 90, went to rest in the arms of the angels, Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from his residence. He went to join his wife of 63 years, Evelyn M. (Wascher) who was called home on Sept. 22 of this year. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 11 at Dover United Church of Christ with Pastor Mike Loser officiating. A visitation will be from 10:30-11 at the church. A graveside service will follow at St. Jacobs Lutheran Cemetery in York New Salem with full military honors provided by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Smith was born on May 6, 1919 in Bair Station, PA, a son of the late John E. & Cordelia M. (Klinedinst) Smith. John worked for 37 years for York International, retiring as a Personnel Manager. John served in the U.S. Army during WWII from Janurary 1943 to December 1945. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart as well as three bronze stars. Mr. Smith was a member of the 25 Year Club of York International. He was a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose # 148 and The Viking Athletic Association. Mr. Smith is survived by two daughters, Sandra Shaffer and her husband Dennis of Thomasville, and Sharon Gochenauer and her husband Gary of Wellsville; and four grandchildren, Todd and Brett Shaffer; and Matt and Sara Gochenauer. Preceding him in death was a brother, Merle E. Smith. Memorial contributions may be made to Asera Care Hospice, 44 Bowman Rd., York, PA 17408.
