Red Lion-Joan G. (Peters) Smith, 81, died Sunday, December 19, 2010 at her residence in Windsor Township. She was the wife of the late Richard N. Smith. For 37 years, Joan and Richard had a special marriage and created family traditions and a home that radiated love and commitment to family. Joan was a dedicated wife and Mother, who consistently and fairly provided a nurturing environment for her family. A celebration of life tribute will be at 11 AM Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Life Tributes by Olewiler and Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc, 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion with her pastor, the Rev. James E. VanZandt officiating. A reception will follow at the family farm. Burial will be private in Zion United Methodist Cemetery. Born September 18, 1929 in York, she was a daughter of the late W. Kenneth and Thelma (Douglas) Peters. Joan graduated from Shippensburg State College in 1951 with majors in Biology and English. She taught primary school in Duncannon, PA. Joan worked for Spurgeon Smith and Sons Meat Market of Red Lion, PA, and met Richard, a member of this family business. For 54 years, Joan lived on and was dedicated to the preservation of an historic Pennsylvania Dutch farm. Since childhood, she was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Red Lion, PA. Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Linda C. Smith of Margate, NJ, her son, Stephen B. Smith and his wife, Roberta of Hummelstown, PA, two grandchildren, Andrew T. Smith and Stephanie S. Smith, one brother, W. Douglas Peters, and his wife, Ruth, one sister, Rae Jean Poff and her husband, Eugene and nieces and nephews. Joan will be greatly missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of her family.
