He was born September 25, 1920 in Ellsworth Maine to loving, generous parents Charles Carroll and Myrle Marks Grindal. In 1928 he moved to Boston where he lived for the next 50 years to solidify his lifelong love of all Boston sports teams. Once an active Boston Braves fan he became a lifelong Red Sox enthusiast after their move to Milwaukee, he was thrilled to share stories of watching the greats play such as Babe Ruth and his all-time favorite, Ted Williams. Bill was blessed cheer on his team at the 1946 and 1975 World Series. Bill described being the most blessed man in the world to have two super wives in his lifetime. Married August 11, 1943 until her death from cancer in 1977, Evelyn Roth Grindal was with him through thick and thin. October 28, 1979 he married his second wonderful devoted wife Susan in Suffern, NY. He also leaves behind a loving son William C. Grindal of Revere, MA, devoted daughter Julie Ann Emig and husband Harry of Dover, PA, and loving son Brent R. Sheldon and wife Bonnie of Warwick, NY. The love is multiplied by his four grandchildren Michael and Katherine Smith, and Christopher and Megan Sheldon. He loved to hear from all his in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Proudest of his time serving our country in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 during World War II on the U.S.S. Engstrom DE 50 he spent twenty-two months convoying turbulent waters in the Aleutian Islands of the North Pacific. During his time in the Navy he completed two years of college and earned a degree as motor machinist. He worked the entirety of his adult life in the automobile business and eventually became Service Director of New England for American Motors, Toyota, and finally Subaru until he retired in 1987. During retirement Bill continued his very active lifestyle, playing in the Red Land Senior Pool league for 15 years, member of the Destroyer Escort Sailor Association, Society of Automotive Engineers, volunteering over 4,000 hours as a transporter at York Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and Dover Library. He and wife Susan loved to travel across the USA, Canada, Alaska, Panama Canal, Europe several times, and even China. He wrote, “Thank you God for a wonderful lifetime!!” Memorial contributions may be made to the restoration of the USS Slater DE-766, PO Box 1926, Albany, NY 12201.
