York—Bertha B. (Strayer) Folkemer, 95, died, Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Folkemer. A Memorial Service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, October 31, 2009 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market St., in York, followed by a time of gathering with the family in the Folkemer Fellowship Hall. Her pastor, the Rev. Kevin T. Shively will be officiating the service. Heffner Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc, 1551 Kenneth Rd, York, is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Folkemer was born in York, on July 9, 1914, a daughter of the late Reuben F. and Mary (Bentz) Strayer. Mrs. Folkemer was a 19M31 graduate of York High and later earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hood College in Frederick, MD She was employed in the trust department of Irving Trust Company in New York City from 1936-1942. In 1942, she began working with York Bank and Trust Company in their trust department until her marriage in 1946. She was a life time member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, a member of Half Century Fellowship, where she played the piano for many years, a member and past president of the Lutheran Church Women and a Sunday School Teacher. She was very active in the formation of the Literacy Program in York, a member of and served as General Chairman of the Women's League of Gettysburg College and represented the group on the College's Board. In addition, she also served as President of the group's local chapter and was a very active volunteer with Lutheran Social Services. Mrs. Folkemer is survived by three sons, John G. Folkemer and his wife, Donna of Baltimore, MD, David A. Folkemer and his wife, Suzanne of York and the Rev. Dr. Stephen P. Folkemer and his wife, Beth of Gettysburg; seven grandchildren, Tina Folkemer Hawkins and her husband, Frank, Michael Folkemer and his wife, Holly, Philip Folkemer, Paul Folkemer, Joel Folkemer and his wife, Ashlee, Margaret Folkemer and Nathan Folkemer; two great grandchildren, Anthony Hawkins and Angelique Hawkins. She was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur L. Strayer and a sister, Mabel Snow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 839 W. Market Street, York, Pa 17401.
